Strong Roots is an exciting, innovative therapeutic garden project in Norwich. Based on a quadruple allotment plot on the Bluebell Allotment (north) site in Norwich, we offer psychological therapy in a garden setting.

Strong Roots provides a safe and supportive environment that encourages personal discovery and development. Gardening and other activities are an option to engage with if individuals feel they could be helpful, but are not an aim in themselves. These activities, in addition to counselling, may help an individual to develop self-acceptance and a feeling of being more able to relate to the world around them.

Facilities include a summerhouse, seating areas in the garden, a composting toilet, and two fruit cages. There are also two small ponds which attract diverse wildlife. There is a wood-burning stove in the summerhouse for use in winter, and a shelter to sit or work in during bad weather.

I like coming to Strong Roots because it is quiet, therapeutic and makes me feel good about myself. I also like watching the butterflies and bees fluttering among the flowers… I like the winter when we have a nice warm bonfire. I feel good about myself when I talk about different issues“.

I find small rooms claustrophobic but I feel more open in an outside space. I find it easier to talk because it is peaceful but not completely silent.

In most cases, people attend individual sessions with the Strong Roots co-ordinator and therapist Lucy Scurfield.
